When Imperial Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945, Tokyo was a city in ruins, its residents left counting the human cost of more than a decade at war. From those ashes came the next chapter of Tokyo's history, as modernity and tradition mingled to build a new metropolis.
This historian-led walking tour follows the city and its people through the war years: the destruction, the small pockets that survived, and the rebuilding that followed. Your guide will share the stories of the residents who lived through it, from black marketeers to returning soldiers to ordinary people piecing their lives back together. Along the way, you'll see how modern Tokyo was constructed, quite literally, from the ruins of the old.
